Changes Ahead: The Dining Room

I’ve pondered changes for the dining room, above, for several months now. I’ve been fiddling with it, adding the shoe cabinet, adding the sofa/bench piece, moving the flor tiles from the living room into this space, playing with table decor some. It’s still not really working. I like all the elements of the space, I’m just not sure I like them together. And, as much as I like the green paint, I think its time for a change.

I looked at my pinterest kitchen inspiration board, which is as much dining room as kitchen as ours are attached, and I noticed some trends. I like gray. Shocking, I know. I like gray dining rooms that are still bright and modern and perhaps have a little bit of whimsy. Exhibits a-f.

Now that the Apartment Therapy photo shoot is over, I can start to put up some swatches. I’d like to have a good before and after done for the new traffic that will drive anyway. Deadlines are good. And don’t tell Finn, but I’m thinking of changing out the light fixture too. He made the one in there from some horrendously bad Ready Made directions several years ago. I love it but it’s not right over the dining table, at least not on its own. I’d like two of these lights from CB2. I think the DIY pictured in the photo from The Brick House above, though, would look even better. I’d also like a new table, but I don’t know that that’s in the cards. Something rectangular and a little rustic (but not too much). hmmm. The hunt is on.

I was just going to suggest changing the wall color :). I’m looking for a larger possibly more rustic table too. I bet you’ll find one before I do! Good luck!

I gree — I bet you will find a table that is perfect for very cheap. Whenever I search Craigslist I find NOTHING. I am trying to decide on curtains and rug for living room now. I was inspired by your CL Pinterest board. But alas. NOTHING.

Can’t wait to see what you decide for the dining room!

Great ideas, Kathryn! I look forward to seeing the results. (And if you decide to sell the light that Finn made, let me know. I’ve been considering trying my hand at making one, but I can never quite get the motivation.)

    Good luck with the re-design!

something on which to set the 60 (SIXTY) inch tv my husband just ordered. and something on which to sit. We have one wing type chair that I am going to recover. Leaning toward a sectional (your second floor plan) don’t think I would have much luck finding two leather couches i like on CL. Oh and a rug. Not much. ;) Decided on burlap for the curtains….

I think the room with the dark gray board & batten and the chartreuse door would be a great inspiration for that room. I have an idea for the back wall with the shelves that involves a slat wall type Ikea headboard and floating shelves. Trust me. It could rock.
